Words can't carry experiences.
I know there are things that my loved ones have been through that they could describe to me until their face is purple and I still wouldn't understand. No one would. Nobody else was there to take it in.
I often find language to be dehumanizing and simplistic. We describe things like, "this person was murdered." "Murdered" doesn't begin to describe what the victim went through, what their family saw, etc. etc. and yet we still think we can graze past it with one word and understand what happened.
We don't.
The only company I can offer them is care through understanding that I don't understand. I've at least seen enough to know that pain hurts. It's all I can do.
