Is love transactional? Why/ why not?

What’s your experience? I’ve heard that only relationships are transactional.. not necessarily love. I’d like to think true love transcends all boundaries.

Love means caring about your partner more than you care about yourself. If you still regard yourself of primary importance between the two of you, then it's unlikely to be love you feel. It might be lust or desire, but it isn't love.

@Richard65 This 100%.

Of course, you don’t want to completely lose yourself in a relationship, but it’s important to think beyond yourself.

@stillgrowing I agree, though I enjoy the idea of embracing a kind of madness for a woman, a complete loss of reason because I just love her so much. I want to feel like a giddy teenager who finds he cannot eat and experiences the sublime agony of adoring someone beyond words. I know that's a poet's florid ideal of love, but it's a beautiful fantasy. I've been to that place once.
