What Love Is

love never came easy to me
until you came along
you gave me a reason to smile
a reason to open my eyes
and face what my day was to bring

love was something others lived
day to day and year to year
but for me love was merely a concept
until you it was never my reality

but you my love brought
something tangible to me
brought me something real
you brought me yourself

and as you showed me your heart
I felt comfortable showing you mine too
and with each passing day
it was easy for me to say
I love you more and more

I know life is not an easy game to play
it has its struggles and hurts along the way
and sometimes I have a tendency
to stumble, fall and just lose my way
but your love has been a beacon
and it has time after time
showed me the way to return to you

and to you I returned and I always will
because I cannot live without you
no matter the circumstance or obstacle
and I will tell each day that I love you
show you that I love you
by always finding a way back to you

I do not know what the future holds
but one thing I promise you
is I will love you beyond forever
straight through an eternity
though it be too short of a time
to spend loving you
