Podcasts I listen to regularly

Stuff You Should Know. Everyone listens to Josh and Chuck. It would be more interesting if I didn't listen to this.

Behind the Bastards. Journalist Robert Evans and guests present the lives of the worst people in history.

The Michael Shermer Show. Noted skeptic Michael Shermer hosts various experts who discuss trends in American society.

The Savage Lovecast. Advice columnist Dan Savage takes listeners' questions. I generally only listen to the first few minutes, when Dan gives his take on news of the past week.

Misquoting Jesus. Noted Bible scholar Bart Ehrman explains the meaning of the books of the Bible and early church history.

Maintenance Phase. Author Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes discuss health fads and debunk food and dietary misconceptions.

Jew Oughta Know. Jason Harris discusses Jewish history and religious practice along with current events.

Data Over Dogma. Noted Bible scholar Dan McClellan and Dan Beecher strive to "increase public access to Biblical scholarship and combat misinformation about the same."

Closer to Truth. Robert Lawrence Kuhn explores aspects of human and artificial consciousness.

Astronomy Cast. Professor Pamela Gay and Astronomy Today publisher Frazier Cain discuss various aspects of the universe (stars, planets, galaxies, black holes, etc.) along with current events in astronomy. I am a paid subscriber to this podcast.

Podcasts I do not listen to regularly, and defunct podcasts I used to listen to

What Next Plus. I get this for free with my Slate Plus subscription. This is a discussion of current events.

Trandescendant. A SW member and their parent discuss LGBTQ-related issues.

The World of Phil Hendrie. A rambling discussion and argument involving up to half a dozen people, all voiced by Phil Hendrie. You have to hear this to believe it. Yes, all of those people are Phil, talking to each other in real time.

The Savage Nation. Ultra-right wing commentator Michael Savage discusses current events. This is a great window into the extreme fringe of the American right wing.

The Nietzsche Podcast. Keegan Kjeldsen discusses Nietzsche's writings and philosophy.

The Influencer's Edge. I attended Hebrew school with the host, who discusses business-related topics.

The Grey Area. Sean Illing discusses psychology and consciousness.

The Fat Lip. Now defunct, former BBW model Ash Nischuk discussed societal issues affecting fat people.

The ITER Podcast. About the ITER tokamak under construction at Cadarache near Saint-Paul-lès-Durance in France. This is the largest and most expensive experiment in human history, the sole objective of which is to demonstrate the feasibility of generating power through hydrogen fusion. If successful, it will be followed in succeeding decades with commercial fusion generators.

The Fab Fatties. Several fat women discuss navigating life.

The Bernie Sanders Show. Now defunct.

The Audit. Now defunct, each season was a deep, multi-episode dive into historical trends.

Strict Scrutiny. A podcast about current legal issues.

Streetwise Hebrew. Guy Sharett explains modern Hebrew slang.

Straight White American Jesus. Former Evangelical ministers Bradley Onishi and Dan Miller discuss current events through a lens critical of white Christian nationalism.

Stay Tuned With Preet. Former US Attorney Preet Bharara discusses current events from a legal standpoint.

Sleep With Me. Drew Ackerman in a rambling discourse on the most boring topics imaginable with the goal of putting the listener to sleep as quickly as possible. Do you like to fall asleep listening to podcasts, but worry about missing something important and having to listen to them again? No worries here, you won't miss a damn thing.

Mindscape. Sean Carroll discusses consciousness.

Politically Georgia. Formerly hosted by Bill Nigut, several journalists discuss Georgia politics.

Minyard and Minyard do a Podcast. Now defunct. I used to listen to the Ken and Bob Company on KABC when I was in high school and my first few years at UCLA on morning drive. Ken Minyard and Bob Arthur would basically banter about whatever was on their mind. More recently, Ken and his son Rick hosted a podcast where they would discuss the past week's events. They've now shifted to daily YouTube shows.

A Life in Lyrics. Now defunct, this was two seasons of poet Paul Muldoon interviewing Paul McCartney. Each episode would focus on a specific song - the circumstances of Paul writing it, what he wanted to convey, and anything else of interest. If you're a fan of McCartney or The Beatles, you will enjoy this.

Making Sense. Prominent atheist Sam Harris discusses current events and social trends.

Coddiwomple With the Shadow People. I know the creator and subscribe to support them.

5-4. A podcast about the Supreme Court.

Amicus. Another podcast I get for free with my Slate Plus subscription. Current events from a legal perspective.
