Listening to a podcast
Where they are talking about the horror movie, "The Kill List". They are discussing how the main character is a broken man because he was raised with the toxic masculine ideology of being self sufficient and not relying on others for any sort of help, thus constantly swallowing trauma and anger.
They stated that the wife would have been an excellent protagonist because she has self control and training to be in controll, but because the thing a "self sufficient man" hates the most is a woman who is in control of her life. That if the main character had just reached out and said he needed help, he wouldn't have gone over the edge.
I find horror so interesting in that it takes very relevant social and political topics and ratches it up to the extreme degree. This movie is definitely one in regards to toxic masculinity.
