Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

"Close the door - quietly," Daddy said. "And step inside."

I tried to read Daddy's eyes; he refused to look at me until I did as he instructed. Then I turned to face him.

His face was pinched from his recent illness. His beautiful, changeable eyes, now hazel, now honey gold, bore an expression of regretful resignation and a smoldering anger. He hadn't moved off the white Queen Anne chair that went with the desk pushed against the wall. His mouth was a straight line of -

He sighed. His eyes narrowed. "First of all, what are you doing home at this time of the afternoon? You're two hours early."

I gulped. I had no decent answer.

"Never mind," Daddy continued, as if I had replied. "You walked out, didn't you? What did we talk about, just this morning? What did you promise me?"

I didn't expect this quiet resignation. This wasn't Daddy. I was afraid of this man who was asking questions and not expecting a reply -

"Sit down," Daddy gestured to the bed. "You make me nervous, fidgeting like that."

I took two steps backward and collapsed onto the puff quilt covering the bed.

Daddy stood up with an explosive, exasperated breath. "Good GOD, girl! What the devil has gotten into you lately? I talk, and talk, and talk again,I ask you to make me honest promises. and what do I get? Lies, backtalk and secrets and deceit. This isn't like you. This isn't the daughter I raised - "

This was totally unexpected. Never had Daddy said these things to me before.

I couldn't hold it back. I burst into tears - heavy, shaking sobs that shook the bed under me.

Daddy stood looking at me. His face was a bluish blur through the rainfall of water from my wet eyes.
