As I stepped into the hallway, I sniffed appreciatively. Mom was making pork chops with apple rings. She hadn't done that in a long while.
She must be in a good mood, I thought, soundlessly slipping my winter coat from my back and going to the coat closet. She usually made something that was simple and less work at night. She knew both Daddy and I loved this.
I slipped the coat on its hanger, soundlessly closed the door, and slipped into the staircase to the second floor. The quicker I got out of sight, the better.
I paused. I thought I had heard someone cross the hall and go into my bedroom. Not that I locked it during the day - I didn't have anything hidden up there - but Mom complained about the way I kept it. Well, she didn't HAVE to go in there and pick up my laundry. I could get it off the floor and do my own stuff. I was old enough after all...
I shook my head. I had stopped on the staircase. I continued on, a Swedish chill chasing down my back, remembering the stories Grandma used to tell me when I was a little girl and she caught me in something I shouldn't be into. I didn't believe in ghosts and spirits, but I had certainly heard about -
I entered my bedroom - and stopped short. My father was in my bedroom. What was he doing home at this hour of the day?
