I wondered, then decided, on the way home I wasn't going to share this latest transgression with my parents. Daddy would be furious, after all the promises I had made, and Mom - well, Mom would decide Daddy couldn't handle me and treat me like I was six years old again. If Daddy wasn't too mad and on my side, maybe I could escape that ultimate disgrace...
And what did I do that was so wrong? I was tired of being cooped up. A freak accident, and I took my chances. It wasn't missing the pep assembly so much as it was Mr. Evans' last words before I left the office,
"You are the most disobedient student I ever encountered. You knew what today was. You knew what the rules were and are. No one else left the room when you did. Did you think I wasn't going to hear about it, if I didn't see it actually happen? Now, I don't ever want to see you in here again this year. If I have to see you, in anywhere but the Disciplinary Room serving your time when you're supposed to - " He picked up the blue-covered book of disciplinary slips, shook it and dropped it on the desk. " this is going to have your name on every one of these. Now get out of here."
I whirled without replying and went to my locker. I put the new slips into my purse and put on my winter coat. I picked up my textbooks and left the building. So WHAT if I had two more classes that afternoon? So what if I had another detention coming? Who cared?
I had gone a block before it hit me. I cared, deeply.
