Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

A pale blue spotlight washed over Mr. Evans as he took his place behind the lectern. Apparently, he saw kids talking behind their hands, because he thumped his uninjured fist on the rolltop and said, "Ladies - young men - may I have your attention?"

The assemblage quieted at the authority in his voice. I could only guess at what the effort was costing him, because I was close enough too see the moisture on his brow.

"This is an important game we are facing...for the players...and the cheerleaders... -"

From somewhere in the left-hand side of the auditorium, a boy yelped hard. Mr. Evans' mood changed instantly. He leaned into the spotlight, pointed at the area the sound came from, and yelled, "Listen, Junior, this is a PEP assembly! We'll talk about the cheerleaders later!"

There was scattered laughter. I laughed, too. I instantly felt better.

But it didn't last. The fat teacher said something to Mr. Evans during the assembly about having an extra child in her class who wasn't on the attendance roll. It occurred to him he had raced out of the Disciplinary Room without locking the kids in as he had intended to.
He suspected me anyhow, and a couple of kids must have ratted me out. The final evidence
were the textbooks, with my name inside them. left on the desk I was sitting at.

I was called out of class that afternoon and sent to Mr. Evans' office. After a blistering lecture that seemed to go on forever, he handed me two detention slips and told me I would serve these two days in his inner office, with the door locked.

It had been a minor victory of sorts. Was it all worth it?
