I had won a hollow sort of victory, but my stubborn mood wouldn't let me enjoy it.
I spent most of my time looking out the window, twisting a hank of my pale=blonde hair, the expression in my eyes, a million miles away. I felt rather than saw Mr.Evans' gaze om me, his eyes flickering in anger. He took to rapping his water glass sharply on the desk top. I jumped the first time I heard it, then ignored the noise.
"Young lady -" Mr. Evans rapped a bit louder. "Young LADY -"
That was meant for me. Everybody knew it. I had the attention of he entire room. Even Carrie, who had been sleeping as usual, was sitting up, rubbing her eyes and yawning softly behind one hand. I pretended not to hear.
The room was tense, gathered for drama.
" I know you can hear me. You haven't gone deaf suddenly. Be so good as to look at me ."
I rolled my blue eyes at him without turning my head. I heard the expulsion of Mr. Evans' breath.
