Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

Daddy took the lead. He pulled the folded notice out of is breast pocket and handed it to Mr. Evans, who unfolded it, and glanced at it briefly, then began to hand it back to my father, saying, "There's no signature, Mr. Christensen. Didn't your daughter - "

Daddy cut him off. "She did. My daughter doesn't lie to me. Even if she did, I know what that notice is for. She told me exactly what happened, and I don't think it's justified under the circumstances. You can protest all you like, Mr. Evans, but I won't sign it."

Silence. For one red-hot minute, I wondered what would happen. Then Mr. Evans withdrew from a desk drawer a battery-operated shredder. Placing it on the desk, he fed the notice into the machine and turned it on.

We left the office as the shredder ground away. Daddy stopped as we stepped around the corner. I glanced over my shoulder at the still-dark Disciplinary Room with a feeling of deep loathing.

"You've got someplace to go, young lady." Daddy said softly. "You better get going. I'll see you at home later."

I sighed in resignation, picked up my schoolbag, and gave Daddy a last hug before hurrying down the hall. Two guys were playing Morse Code with the overhead lights. Everyone else was pretending to study or do homework.

Except Carrie. Carrie was sleeping on the table again.
