Capricorn In Aquarius - Part Two

Shortly after school resumed, Daddy came down with a very bad cold. He struggled to take me to school each day, but his heart wasn't in it. Mom was still put out with me, and she wasn't a good driver in the best of weather, let alone the wailings of the wind and icy sheets of a rainy snow that froze each night.

On the third day of my return to school, Daddy couldn't get out of bed. Mom summoned our family doctor, who came and examined him minutely as I hovered behind her in the doorway.

"It's pneumonia," he said presently, shaking down the therm in his mouth. "Ninety-nine degrees. You're lucky you didn't collapse on the floor, John! You stay in BED, where you belong. I'll have something sent put from the pharmacy to bring down your temp, and then you stay put. Understand?"

Daddy nodded weakly. He looked at me. I held my bookbag and coat in my arms. I had to go to school, but it would be suicide for Mom to go out with me.

"I'll call Mari, Daddy," I said suddenly. "Maybe her dad is still home, and he can take us both."

I turned and ran from the room, my heart singing. Oh, freedom! Anything would be better than sitting next to Daddy in enforced silence!
