Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two
I didn't want to return to school after New Year's. All I had to look forward to was that damn double detention that was hanging over my head. Daddy knew about it, and I knew without asking that he was still mad over it, and would be until it was finished. Mari walked to school alone, and Daddy drove me to and from school in silence.
The first day back, he pulled up in front of school. As I opened my door to get out, he warned me, "Go in and sign in, so they know you're here."
I glared over my shoulder.
"Don't give me that face. It's your own fault you've already got detention. The sooner you serve your sentence, the better off we'll be. Both of us."
I climbed out without replying. I closed the door on Daddy's reminder: "I'll be here after your after-school detention. Four o'clock."
He pulled away as I climbed the front stairs and went inside. I walked down the hall to the Detention Room and pulled open the door.
The only person in the room besides me was that same little freshman who was sleeping on the long refectory table before the window I had seen before the holiday. I wondered a bit cynically if she had stayed the entire break. She didn't move as I went over to the teacher's desk and signed in.
A teacher I knew by sight, but not by name, came in. She saw the two of us. She said to me, "Well, take a seat. This room will be filling up soon. Carrie - " she addressed the girl still on the table. " - Carrie, go take a seat. That's enough sleeping."
Carrie murmured something distinct and stirred in her sleep, but didn't get up. without further ado, the teacher walked over and grabbed her by the hair. She deposited her into the nearest seat and pushed her books in front of her. "Now get to work!" She left her rubbing her head and whimpering.
No doubt about it. It was going to be a long detention.
