Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

The balance of that week was horrible. I cried my heart out most of the time and kept to myself. Following Daddy's suggestion. I came downstairs on Christmas Eve night and tried to be good for Mom, but I flopped onto the couch and propped my head on one hand, staring at nothing. My eyes were swollen from the tears they refused to stop shedding.

Finally, Mom got up, apparently wanting to say something, but Daddy beat her to it. In a firm but soft voice, he said, "Merrilee - I asked you to come down with us and be pleasant. Since you can't muster a smile on your face, why don't you just go back to your room? Wash your face before you go to bed - "

I couldn't believe it. Was he sending me to bed NOW? I raised my head from my hand and stared at him incredulously. He looked pained.

"Please - for my sake."

I sat up, still looking put upon, and sighed loudly as I headed up the stairs to my room. The tears began again as I closed the door and returned to the history book I had left open on my bed. I laid on my stomach, staring at the page without seeing the neat, impersonal lines of print.

I wish I were married, I thought passionately. It's a crashing BORE just being a schoolgirl. I could do what I want, once I was married...

Married. Married to Johnny, Where was he tonight, on this wet Christmas Eve?

(To Be Continued.)
