Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

I marginally noticed the fact that the kids and Kathleen had followed me to see what I was looking at. They boiled around me, trying to climb over each other.

"Lookit that CAR!" one of the older girls whispered, her eyes wide. She leaned forward and nearly went through the glass. Kathleen seized her and pushed her back. She turned and surveyed the mess of nightgowns, pajamas, and assorted bedding on the parlor floor. She went into action.

"You - " she pointed at me. "You stay where you are. The rest of you - " she swept her arms wide. "Pick up that bedding and nightstuff and take it into the spare room. Pile it onto both beds and start to fold it up - neatly. C'mon, now, hurry it up." She clapped he hands sharply to get their wandering attention. They had all gone to the window again to watch a second car slip around the corner and join the first. They were slowly circling to the far end of the street, obviously looking for a place to park.

One of the older boys objected. "Thagt's GIRL'S work. Why do we gotta do this?"

"Because I SAY so!" Kathleen's voice was cracking; she was as I was. "You can help the little ones. Just DO it!"

Grumbling, he grabbed two quilts, a handful of assorted sheets, and disappeared down the hallway after the others.

Kathleen turned to me, but she was watching the cars come up the street again. "There ain't that many insurance men doin' business out this way." she muttered. "This isn't going to be pleasant. Whatever they say, unless it's addressed to you, say nothing. You understand?"

I nodded. We both turned at the sound of slamming car doors, and watched the first of several officers assail the windy, slippery sidewalk.
