Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two

The morning seemed to spin by. I tried to keep busy by helping Kathleen. When I tried to help her do the dishes, she gently but firmly pushed me away from the sink. "With that lacy blouse? No, you don't. You just settle down and wait."

She didn't have to tell me wait for what. I had heard the police tell her they would be back in the morning to search and find out if she was lying about Johnny and Lucas taking up residence there. Strangely enough, she had the panel door open in the room they had occupied the previous evening before last. The two twin beds that were inside were neatly made, and there was no evidence of male occupancy. No dirty clothes - Kathleen had chucked them down the laundry chute - and the closets stood open and empty. Why in the world was she revealing the existence of the secret room?

I sat down on the bench on one side of the kitchen wall. It was the only place to be out of the way. It was midmorning and the kitchen was alive with the crowd of little girls and a few boys I had discovered in the parlor. There must have been at least twelve or fourteen children, all noisy, laughing, and careless about what was to come. I knew I had to wait until Cleveland Municipal Court opened and the weekend judge signed the warrants to arrest Johnny or Lucas on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder - no, more likely murder, because the policeman one of them had shot had now died. I had gleaned that much from their visit last night. And one of them would doubtless have a warrant for me to -

Stop it! I told myself sharply. No one said you were going to jail. Just home!

And I didn't look forward to it any sooner than the unspoken parting was going to happen.

The kids were making me nervous. I got up and walked to the parlor door - it stood open - and on through to the front door. As I stood there watching the sleepy traffic begin to stir, I saw one of the two unmarked black squadrols from last night slowly turn the near corner from the west and slow to a near-stop in front of the Center.
