I Love to Write
Capricorn in Aquarius - Part Two
"What are you DOING here?"
I came to myself. I looked around. There was only me and Johnny in the dimly lit kitchen. Kathleen and Lucas had vanished.
Johnny crossed the room and sat down in a large rocker with a ruffled paisley covering tied to the back of it. His head drooped and he passed a weary-looking hand over his face. He looked up to see me looking at him.
"Come here," he said.
I hesitated. This has GOT to be a dream. Nothing tonight seemed real. I was afraid, after oh so many weeks of not being in his arms again...was it really REAL?
in the sudden stillness, I could hear thumpings and muffled conversation from somewhere behind me. Kathleen and Lucas, probably, making up a bed for me. The storm had abated just a little, but I could still hear the whistling wail as it moved east toward Lake Erie with its burden of ice and sleet.
"Merrilee...come here!"
Obediently, I shuffled toward the rocker. When I was within grabbing distance, Johnny seized me by the waist and put me into his lap. Stupid with sleep, I blinked up into the face I knew and didn't know.
Johnny's face was thinner than I remembered, much more drawn with huge half-moons almost as dark as bruises under his beautiful blue eyes. He was breathing more stridently than I remembered, almost as if I were too heavy for him. Crazed with fear, I wriggled to get down again. He held me more tightly.
"Hey, Merry - where y'goin'?" he breathed. "It's been so long and you just got here - oh, GOD, I MISSED you. Badly. You don't know how much - "
My heart was thudding like winter thunder. I was suddenly very, very tired. ALL those weeks of deprivation -
I forgot what I was wearing, twisted in my seat, and kissed Johnny with a passion long denied. He responded with an equal eagerness.
