My book was something more a dream. I loved horses, but my family was poor. So I was this child. I was the one who witnessed a rider asking for more than the mare could give. She almost died. And her abuse made this mare difficult to control, till this child came in and showed her kindness. She volunteered to care for the animals on this farm. She would brush and bathe them and she would rub her hands over to discover the sore spots.
Ray, you need to become a character within this book. Yes you are it's creator. So just tell the story. Make up the scenes. Show us the surroundings. There should be those who are cruel as well as those who believe they are making a difference.
And make some of it up. Not everyone experiences the same. I like to use my sense of smell. The description may be needed to show the reader the sheer anguish not only in what he/she sees but the great sorrow in the loss. What do you feel? War is a waste. It can shatter so many lives. Be descriptive with the pain the character feels.
The reader needs to capture what you fee, what you see and hear. The soldier has been long in the sun and has great thirst. Simply be descriptive. Be there when they wake up and asks the reader...WHY ME?
*hope this helps your engines to start.
