Bottom line is simple. Writers write. You need structure, make a schedule and stick to it. Some writers write three hours a day, some for six hours. The important part is writing, regardless of how many reasons you can think of not to write. The list of excuses is limitless but the end result is the same. No writing gets done.

If your story is harrowing, something that is likely to upset you, I strongly recommend you connect with a counselor who can help you through it.

Very few writers just put it on paper and walk away. There is editing, organizing. Polishing, editing. And more editing. Life doesn’t happen in neat little episodes like television. It can be messy, beautiful and awful by turns. As a writer, your job is to tell the story you want to tell in a manner that allows the reader to understand it. And keep reading.

Some writers write from 8 am to 11 am and then again from 4 pm to 7 pm.

It doesn’t matter so much when or how long you write as it matters THAT you write. The longer you work at it, the more familiar it will become. Sometimes you may get stuck, but don’t stop writing. Work on another story until your mind unlocks again. Just keep writing.

Writers can’t get away with “It was soul-crushing. You know - you get it.” No. Tell me.

Writers write, and until they do write they are would-be writers.

Do something to get warmed up, like a diary or journal. Then write as long as you feel 100%. Stop before you get tired. For me that's 4 to 5 hours, but I'm old. Hemingway said to stop where you know what comes next, even if it's in the middle of a sentence. And treat it like a job, don't rely on inspiration, just do it whether you want to or not. If you get it wrong you can fix it tomorrow.
@hunkalove sounds good

Check out Stephen King's book "On Writing" it's considered an amazing resource for beginner writers. Particularly it has a lot about actually getting work done.
@CountScrofula that is interesting. i looked up what would Stephen king say is the correct amount of time to write

Write for ten minutes and then decide what you need.
@LILY61 write for ten minutes.
How do you feel? Do you need to go on? Is the writing taking you in a direction you want to explain or explore more? And then, decide if you should take more time just getting words out or decide where you want to take what you have written so far
@nonsensiclesnail it is the starting that is freaking me out. i don't know if i can expose myself this way
