My education must be lacking.
I always multiplied two numbers simply by their product being the Antilogarithm of the sum of their Common (i.e.to base-10 ) Logarithms!
Obviously breeding asps confined to a shed requires a more subtle approach to the function, and being animals the "natural" one. Does it produce an integrated colony? Can we differentiate between these somewhat sinuous snakes?

a * b = exp( ln(a) + ln(b) )
(a,b > 0)
a ^ b = exp( b * ln(a) )
(a>0)
(a,b > 0)
a ^ b = exp( b * ln(a) )
(a>0)
