Shakespeare's beauty of thought

"No, faith, not a jot; but to follow him thither with modesty enough and likelihood to lead it, as thus: Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth into dust, the dust is earth, of earth we make loam, and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop a beer-barrel?" (Hamlet, act 5, scene 1)

As I was bringing myself down to absolute nothingness because of having nothing to show for in a life already half done, I opened up my little booklet with Shakespeare's Hamlet and my eyes fell upon the lines above. No matter how glorious and famous other people’s deeds might be, everyone dies and becomes part of the same dirt. It's an excellent antidote for human pride, reflecting both on our tendency to overestimate our own importance and the ultimate futility of worldly things in face of death.

I always loved his lines in this, "To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man"

@JamieDeer But keep in mind the character of Polonius in the play for Shakespeare presents him rather as a man whose desire to serve the King is rooted as much in vanity and a sense of his own importance as in duty
@val70 i do. It deepens the sentiment.
@JamieDeer Classic.
To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man
One of the most salient literary quotes and truisms.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON Yes, don't strive to please others by changing what you believe in or acting in any way that is outside what you really want to do. Takes me back to my gran's house. Almost empty of possession but there was thought and spirituality around each corner.
@val70 It sounds so meaningful and lovely. Thanks for sharing.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON My pleasure. I'm only happy these days with that in mind.
