The Audacity of Fire

There is a particular kind of sorrow in tending a fire one never intends to enter.

In striking the match, coaxing the embers, breathing life into something wild and beautiful, only to keep it forever contained.

How intoxicating, the heat without the danger. The exquisite pleasure of desire without the vulnerability of surrender.

To fan the flames, to revel in their intensity, to hunger for their warmth, yet never quite dare to discover what might happen if they were allowed to consume.

And oh, how magnificently it burned.

Rich and radiant. Fierce with longing. Alive with the delicious tension of possibility.

It was no illusion. No fleeting spark mistaken for something greater. It was a fire tended with tenderness and desire, one that illuminated hidden corners of two worlds and awakened hungers neither might otherwise have known.

But even the most exquisite fire needs room to breathe.

There is only so long that anticipation can sustain what longs to be experienced. Only so much beauty in the promise of almost.

Some hungers are meant to be tasted. Some passions are meant to escape the page. Some fires are meant to be entered, not merely admired.

Not because they promise forever.

Not because they are certain to survive the morning.

But because there is something achingly beautiful about surrendering to what is real, however fleeting.

And sometimes, the very boundaries that preserve a flame become the walls that slowly diminish it.

Not for lack of passion.

Not for lack of tenderness.

Not because the fire was anything less than extraordinary.

But because one longed to discover what lay beyond the flames, while the other found solace in their familiar warmth.

And eventually, the beauty of almost was no longer enough.

The fire deserved more than endless anticipation. More than the exquisite ache of possibility. More than a lifetime of burning without ever being allowed to become.

The fire did not fail.

It burned as beautifully as it could within the space it was given.

And when that space became too small for all it might have been, there was nothing left but to let it go.

Not every fire is extinguished by indifference.

Some simply cannot survive forever behind glass.

May you taste the flavors of life!

Sometimes, the living, breathing form must break the glass, escape its confines to explore. To grow. These days, most admire the flame behind the glass and move to tbe next exhibit.

@NocturnalTide That’s sad, isn’t it?

@ChampagneOnIce Yes. Such a shame.

My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends,
it gives a lovely light!

A different sentiment, I suppose, but not entirely unrelated. Your poem brought it to mind. 🫂

@ChampagneOnIce Not my poem, LOL. That’s Edna St Vincent Millay. But I think there are times when we all feel that!

@Harmonium1923 I like it. :)
