I Challenge You to Write
THE WEEKLY MUSE
August 31, 2026
This month’s theme:
🛣 THE ROADS WE DIDN’T TAKE 🛣
I started The Weekly Muse because I missed the writing challenges we used to have here and thought it might be fun to bring a little of that creative energy back.
There haven’t been many takers, so I think this will be our final Weekly Muse. I’ve enjoyed stretching my own imagination with these prompts, though, and I’m glad I gave it a try. 😊
And somehow, our final challenge falling on the last day of August feels fitting.
We’ve spent this month writing about roads not taken, choices made, alternate lives, and the possibilities hiding behind unexpected doors.
So for our last one, let’s look forward.
This week’s words:
Map
Release
Open
Tomorrow
Light
Carry
Begin
Optional prompt:
Write about an ending that turns out not to be an ending at all.
Creative twist:
Your final sentence must contain the word begin.
Maybe someone walks away from something they thought they wanted.
Maybe a door closes and reveals another.
Maybe the map was wrong.
Maybe the destination changes.
Maybe someone finally puts down what they’ve been carrying and discovers how much lighter they are without it.
Or maybe your story has absolutely nothing to do with any of those things.
Use at least four of the words, take inspiration from the prompt, try the creative twist, or ignore all of it and follow wherever your imagination takes you.
Write a poem. Tell a story. Make us laugh. Take us somewhere strange. Surprise us.
If you participate, leave a link to your post in the comments so we can find your work, read it, and support one another.
And to everyone who read, wrote, commented, or simply followed along with my little experiment, thank you. 💕
Let’s write! :)
