I Challenge You to Write

THE WEEKLY MUSE
August 24, 2026

This month’s theme:

🛣 THE ROADS WE DIDN’T TAKE 🛣

Somewhere in the landscape of our imagination lives another version of us.

The one who took the job.

The one who stayed.

The one who left.

The one who kissed them.

The one who didn’t.

The one who boarded the plane, chose the other city, said the thing out loud, turned left instead of right, or took the chance we let pass by.

We’ll never know exactly who that person became.

But sometimes, we wonder.

This week’s words:

Map
Stranger
Blue
Photograph
Window
Almost
Elsewhere

Optional prompt:
Write about meeting the person you would have become if you had made one choice differently.

Creative twist:
At some point in your piece, include the line:

“I wondered if they recognized me too.”

You might meet your other self across a crowded café, sitting beside you on a train, staring back from an old photograph, or living an entire life on the other side of a dream.

Maybe you envy them.

Maybe they envy you.

Maybe you discover that the road you didn’t take wasn’t better or worse.

It was simply another life.

And remember, The Roads We Didn’t Take doesn’t have to be melancholy. Your alternate self might be ridiculous, adventurous, wildly successful, spectacularly disastrous, or wondering why on earth you ever considered that haircut.

Use at least four of the words, take inspiration from the prompt, try the creative twist, or follow wherever your imagination takes you.

Write a poem. Tell a story. Share a memory. Make us laugh. Break our hearts. Surprise us. Take us somewhere we haven’t been before.

If you participate, come back and leave a link to your post in the comments so we can find your work, read it, and support one another.

Let’s write! 😊

The line you asked us to use is perfect iambic pentameter. I may be too tipsy to write an actual sonnet at the moment but I like the idea. Perhaps later this week!
