Summer After Dark

At dusk,
I walked barefoot where the waves
used to know how to quiet me.

The air was thick with heat,
cheap whiskey,
and the kind of laughter
I thought would last forever.

We stayed until midnight.

Then one night
the ocean stopped feeling like home.

Now every wave drags me backward.
Every grain of sand remembers
what I spend every day trying to forget.

I still ache for the girl
who thought the beach was a sanctuary—

Lbefore summer learned
how to become a trigger.
