Almost Holy

He kissed her the way people do when they’ve spent too long trying not to.
Denying themselves.

Not rushed.
Not careless.

Like restraint itself had finally given out.

His hand slid along the back of her neck, fingers disappearing into her hair as though he needed something to hold onto while he kissed her. She felt the tension in him immediately. The years of discipline. The carefulness. The constant choosing of control over desire.

And underneath it, something starving.

She inhaled softly against his mouth, and the sound nearly undid him.

“Do you know,” he murmured, lips brushing hers again, “how hard it’s been not to touch you?”

The honesty of it landed deeper than the words themselves.

Because she did know.

She had felt it every time his eyes held hers just a second beyond what was safe.
Every moment.
Every goodbye.
Every almost.

His forehead rested briefly against hers, both of them suspended there in the fragile ache of finally crossing a line they had spent years pretending didn’t exist.

And somehow the most intimate thing about it wasn’t the kiss.

It was the way he looked at her afterward.

Like he’d just found something he thought life had taken from him forever.

Wonder.
Hunger.
Tenderness.
The dangerous, beautiful feeling of being fully awake inside his own body again.

And she felt it too.

Not simply desire.

Recognition.

The terrifying intimacy of realizing someone had reached a part of you that no one else had touched in years, maybe ever.

His thumb brushed slowly across her lips, almost reverently, and she watched the guarded version of him disappear for a moment. No polished executive. No carefully managed man holding himself together through routine and obligation.

Just… him.

A man looking at her like she was both salvation and catastrophe.

He whispered her name like it hurt him a little now.

And God, the way he said it.

As though he already knew this would ruin him.

And loved her anyway.
