the silent dusty streets

the thirst

the broken shoes

the long trail home and away

the longing for a drink

the eyeing and envy of empty discarded bottles

cold nights hot days

blazing sunrises

the noise of roaring steel

the ties passing beneath your feet

the vast expanse of empty world around you

standing on the tracks in the middle of the bay

to your surprise there are stones there

just like on land.. who knew?

This hits in a way that’s hard to explain… there’s something about it that feels both restless and empty at the same time, like survival and wandering all tangled together. The imagery is so vivid I can almost feel the heat, the thirst, the exhaustion in it.

That last line though—“who knew?”—it shifts everything. It’s almost quiet, almost human again after all that intensity. Like a small moment of grounding in the middle of feeling completely lost.

What inspired you to write this?
