A glint of silver..

The platform was unusually quiet for a Friday night, just a few scattered souls waiting for the 11:47 local. I was nursing a lukewarm coffee from the station's vending machine when I noticed her.
She stood near the edge of the platform, bathed in the harsh fluorescent lights, yet somehow managing to look ethereal. A dark trench coat fell open to reveal a simple black dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. Her hair was a cascade of midnight waves, and when she turned slightly, I caught the glint of silver in her ears.
"Waiting for the midnight train to nowhere?" I asked, moving closer.
She smiled, and it was like watching the sunrise in fast motion. "More like the midnight train to somewhere unexpected."
The train arrived with a screech of brakes and a whoosh of air. We boarded and found seats across from each other in the nearly empty car. As the train pulled away from the station, she kicked off her heels, tucking her feet beneath her.
"So," she began, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees, "what's your story?"
I laughed. "That's a bit forward for a stranger, don't you think?"
"I like to cut to the chase," she replied, her eyes dancing with mischief. "Life's too short for pleasantries."
We talked for hours as the train rattled through the dark countryside. She was intelligent and witty, with a laugh that made my stomach flip. But there was something else about her, a certain darkness that lurked just beneath the surface.
"You're staring," she said suddenly, breaking me from my reverie.
"Sorry. You're just... captivating."
She leaned back, crossing her legs slowly, deliberately. "I get that a lot."
The train began to slow as we approached her stop. I felt a pang of disappointment.
"This is me," she said, gathering her things.
"Will I see you again?"
She paused at the door, turning back to face me. "Do you believe in fate?"
"I'm starting to," I admitted.
She smiled that sunrise smile again. "Then I'm sure our paths will cross when they're meant to."
And with that, she was gone, leaving me alone in the train car with nothing but the memory of her silver earrings and the lingering scent of jasmine, wondering if I had just met my future or merely a beautiful ghost passing through the night.
