The mystery of the cave
Nick and Ben were brothers; Nick was 12 years old and Ben 10. They had lived in Arizona most time of their lives, and they were familiar with cactusses and the dust of the desert. But about an year ago they had moved to Missouri, together with their parents. Natur in Missouri was completely different. Not far away from their new house was a cave, and of course the two brothers were very interested in exploring the cave.
Nick's and Ben's dad forbade them to go into the cave because he believed that it would be too dangerous. Nevertheless the boys decided to ride on their bikes to the cave and entering it.
They didn't tell their folks what they planned, they only said that they planned to ride on their bikes nearly the whole day long.
„That's ok“, said their dad, „but you must to be back at home at 6pm. You know what will happen otherwise.“
The brothers nodded and said: „Yes, Dad.“
„And keep distance from the cave!“ he said with a strict voice.
Nick and Ben began their ride. It was a sunny day, and they were cheerful. Of course, their plan was risky; they had both felt dad's belt often enough to know that. But the cave seems to be an extremely interesting and mysterious place, and this was worth taking a risk.
Nick said: „We ride to the cave, entering it and explore it a bit, and then we ride back home. We will return long time before 6 pm, and Dad will probably never find out that we visited the cave.“
„I hope so“, answered Ben.
About one and a half hour later they arrived the cave. They find the entrance of it quickly and went into the cave. The atmosphere in it was fascinating. They noticed many glittering stones, and after a while Nick also noticed a faint blue light, but it seemed to be far away from them.
He said:„I would like to find out where this light comes from and what kind of source spreads it.“
Nick and Ben followed the shine of the light, and they found out that the cave was only a part of a much bigger cave system.
But the light was further away than they had expected. „We should better go back“, said Nick after a while.
But they failed to find their way back to the exit. Nick and Ben slowly realized that they had lost their way.
„How late is it?“ asked Ben.
Nick answered: „I don't know.“
Ben said quietly: „We will be way too late at home. Dad will give both of us a dose of his belt, and when he finds out that we entered the cave, it will be the worst one we ever got!“
Nick didn't answer. Of course Ben was right, but Nick feared something way worse than a dose of dad's belt meanwhile: would they ever leave this cave system alive?
A bit later Ben started crying, and Nick was very close to cry himself.
„Can I help you?" a friendly voice suddenly asked.
Nick and Ben were totally surprised. They saw now a boy about their ages, but he was clothed in a very old fashioned way, like Tom Sawyer. He was barefoot.
„I am Jake Carter“, said the boy. „I will lead you to the exit of the cave system. You will be surprised how close to us it is.“
Jake was right. After a couple of minutes they reached the exit and saw the green grass and the blue sky. They were saved!
Nick and Ben thanked Jake many times before they ride back at home. When they finally arrived at home, it was 5:32 pm.
Nick said: „We were very lucky that we met Jake.“
Some days later Nick and Ben were on a hike in their neighborhood. They arrived a cemetery and walked slowly and silent between the graves.
Than Nick noticed a tombstone. „Ben!“ he said. „Look at that tombstone.“
Ben did, and he read:
„Jake Carter
Born 1836
Died 1848“
