Been working on a book
I gave myself a tarot reading about 11 years ago that I’m still in the process of breaking out yet it led me down a path that needed a context I was unable to give it at the time. Figured sharing with strangers will encourage me to continue so here’s a teaser.
Silence. Stillness. Surrender.
Bai trembled as his hands pushed through the frigid mash of clay and dirt, his fingers fumbling for purchase in the unseen terrain. Disoriented, his legs quivered, struggling to remember the shape and purpose of movement. His breath hitched as his eyes strained to focus, drawn to the faint flicker of warmth in the distance—a fleeting ember hidden deep within the void.
Each step he took echoed like a thunderclap against the cavern walls, the cacophony breaking the oppressive stillness. The drip of water from stalactites marked time with an unrelenting rhythm, amplifying the weight of his surroundings. He stumbled forward, each faltering motion sending shocks through his trembling frame, his aching body yearning for stability.
The faint glow pulsed in and out of view, taunting him, urging him deeper into the labyrinthine structure. Bai pressed on, his mind blank save for the gnawing ache to find that light. His feet sank into the clay with every step, the earth holding him, resisting him, pulling him back toward stillness.
Finally, the warmth began to grow tangible, a gentle heat brushing against his chilled skin. The cavern’s darkness seemed to lift, retreating into shadows as he approached the light. His heartbeat quickened, driven by a mixture of hope and unease. The glow solidified, spilling across the rough walls and illuminating a narrow passage that led outward.
Bai stumbled forward, reaching the threshold, where he was greeted by a breathtaking expanse of light and air. He stepped into the radiance, his body overwhelmed by the sudden embrace of warmth and openness. For a brief moment, he felt whole, as if emerging from a dream he didn’t know he’d been trapped in.
But as the light bathed him, he glanced back into the darkness of the cavern. His shadow remained, unmoving, tethered to the void. It stretched impossibly long, its shape distorted and unfamiliar. Bai stared, his breath catching as he realized the weight of what lingered behind.
The shadow didn’t follow him into the light. It simply waited, silent and still, as if surrendering to the darkness that birthed it.
And Bai turned away, his chest heavy with the knowledge that he hadn’t left the void entirely—it had left a piece of itself within him.
Silence. Stillness. Surrender.
