Their Time Now.....

Entranced by the aura of the sun, Tom sat on the deck in silence, only his thoughts for company. It had been so long since he had kept the company of a female that the mere idea of it terrified him……and yet here he was, anticipating it.
Since his wife had died, he had not wanted to let anyone in but the long winter nights had been lonely once again and he yearned for that human touch. Tonight was the night.
Finding a suitable companion had been difficult at first as he struggled with the new concept of online dating; he had never needed it before but this seemed to be the way nowadays and that is where he had met Sally. Studying her picture, he felt intoxicated by her sparkling blue eyes and her beaming, sunny smile that hypnotised him to realms that he thought were no longer reachable. For months now, they had chatted. First via messages and then via phone texts; like an addict he logged on, his attention now hers. Tonight was the night they would meet…
Glancing at himself in the mirror, he shrugged. He knew he was no looker, he had never tried to disguise this but his attire was impeccable and brushing a tiny morsel of fluff off his lapel he knew he was as ready as he would ever be. Today, he hoped, would be very special, a birthday gift to himself. When he had woken that morning as he did every year on his birthday, the sadness had overwhelmed him as he felt for the space where his late wife had slept. She would be happy for him, he felt, and with time the immense cloak of grief, shrouding his shoulders, had become lighter to bear.
As Tom walked slowly through the hotel foyer, his heart fluttered, the doubt creeping furiously through his veins. What if she chose not to turn up? Would she be waiting at the bar, where she said she would be?
Suddenly, he saw her and as he made his way towards her she turned. There was that smile, the one he had grown to love over the last year, the light that had lit his dark tunnel. Breathing in her bouquet of femininity he sighed and as they embraced, a single tear fell softly onto her hair. Instinct guided them to the lift that would take them to their room and entwined in each other’s arms, like school children they giggled. They both wanted this, had both yearned for this……it was THEIR time now.
Afterwards, they lay in silence… each other’s thoughts for company. Reaching across to her bag, Sally pulled out an envelope with Tom’s name on the front.
“I nearly forgot!” she exclaimed, “happy 90th birthday to you!”
