More Windpunk Writing
I'm trying to post here as a part of a habit, to keep myself working on this project. There is at least one user who is continuing to chat with me, and that interaction helps me stay motivated! I may not be back to writing for another week, but we'll see how it goes. I'm going through a simple process that many aspiring writers may find, but I'm still in the early stages of developing this story...
This is a five-paragraph summary of my story in progress. Give feedback as inspired! I may already have some things solved that aren't yet mentioned, but conversation helps!
On an Earthlike planet where fire’s extreme danger redirected technology development, vehicles rely on wind power and weapons on spring power. In the cooperative kingdom of Sovaria, law requires the royal heir to serve in combat during war, forcing the young crown princess to step forward after her older brother’s loss. Resistance to females in combat made her royal platoon’s training difficult, with skepticism undermining their readiness. Instead of frontline deployment, they were assigned guard duty protecting ballistae at the royal main operating base. Still, this assignment gave them a foothold in the war and time to best rotate between guarding, patrolling, and resting.
As the royal platoon settled into base life, disappointment grew over their safe but unglamorous role far from the real fighting. Balancing guard duty and extended patrols proved physically and mentally taxing. As enemy forces captured nearby bases and hostile contact increased, the crown princess killed an opponent in her first clash, an act celebrated by her platoon yet left her haunted. Their main operating base was soon attacked and overrun. The entire royal platoon, including the princess, was defeated and taken captive.
After their capture, the crown princess struggled with humiliation and concern for her platoon’s morale while in enemy hands. She discovered that her long-lost older brother, the previous crown prince, had been captured earlier and had joined their captors, creating a personal and political conflict. She learned the unsettling truth that Sovaria was subjugating anarchists who only wanted to avoid unfair trade taxes, causing them to fight voluntary militias defending their freedom. The force that captured them turned out to be a professional private security company within a larger combat network. Through long conversations with her brother, she became convinced of the dangers of centralized power and chose to join his side, turning her platoon against Sovaria to march back and confront the congress.
Returning to Sovaria, the crown princess and her allies minimized combat and used association, conversations, titles, and old contacts to advance with little resistance. Their messages had spread ahead, allowing them to reach the capital and besiege the congressional building where the legislators had taken refuge under heavy guard. Upon retrieving her youngest sister, who joined their cause against the congress, they strengthened the siege lines. They discovered that the king had already aligned himself with the besieging forces. Seeing his son’s return, the military’s neutrality, and the congress’s betrayal, the king fully committed to their side.
With the congress defeated, the king chose to retire from rule, passing leadership to his daughter. The crown princess was crowned queen, though she intended the role to be temporary as she considered the future of Sovaria. Advised by her platoon guide and older brother, she faced the difficult decision of how to govern after such upheaval. Doubts remained about whether the kingdom could truly change its ways. In the end, she chose to dismantle the old centralized governance and transition Sovaria toward a voluntaryist society, aligning with the nomadic anarchists they had once fought but now understand.
Congress in this context is not capitalized on purpose... Anyway, feedback welcome!
