I feel so much better about myself! It's the final chapter (in dire need of revision) for my non-fiction book.

@jasonfire The trick is getting off to a good start by simplifying the problem. There can only be four afterlife belief classes and one of them is necessarily correct, for every possibility has been covered:

Combinations of cause and effect:

Natural afterlife
Magical afterlife
Natural cessation
Magical cessation
