I do editing work as a side hustle and I keep seeing the same old mistakes from clients. Here are my top 20 tips to write good:
1. Always avoid alliterations.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague.
4. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
5. Word contractions aren't necessary.
6. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
7. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
8. The passive voice is to be avoided.
9. Who needs rhetorical questions?
10. Do not repeat yourself, or say again what you have already said.
11. Use an apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not needed.
12. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive
13. Don't indulge in sesquipedelian lexicological constructions.
14. Don't overuse exclamation marks!!!
15. Do not use hyperbole; not one in a million of us can do it correctly.
16. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know."
17. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
18. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.
19. Always proofread your work to check if you any words out.
20. And finally, always finish the sentence you
I hope this is helpful. Remember, writing English is difficult, but it can be understood through tough thorough thought though.
