Die for you (Chapter One Part Seven)

He tried to hide his sudden feeling of disappointment at this, after all, it had been some strange whirlwind of events that seemed strange even after that dance she had just given him, if not for being a stronger man he might have started begging her to stay he mused.

"So, can I walk you home?"

He asked and then heard his words echoing over and over in his mind as he realised how dumb they must have sounded, what was he going to do next? offer to carry her school books for her?

"Sure, why not, I only live a few blocks from here"

She offered in response but did not exactly spare his blushes as laughed and a puzzled look formed on her face then she grinned back at him and he felt a little less dumb for his comment.

"Ok, but you got to promise not to bite?"

He said back, his words delivered in an almost sing-song playful fashion and she opened her mouth to show off her impressive vampire fangs once more and he again marvelled at them thinking they did not come off the shelf of the local joke store.

"Alright, Sir. but you need to promise not to bite either, unless"

She said and let the words trail off as she turned to head towards the club's exit, her arm coming back to offer her hand to him as if to seal the deal they had just struck up between them.

He reached out to take her hand but it was just beyond his reach and he felt his brain kick into life and could almost hear his ego scream at him to keep the hell up as he watched her move away towards the exit.

Fortunately for him, he had a considerable advantage in his stride, so he caught up with her as she entered the lobby of the club, the door closing behind and the music now became a muffled sound beyond it.

Not that it would have mattered he thought to himself, she now stood facing the door and seemed to have stopped to wait for him to catch up, well at least she was not trying to ditch him he thought to himself as she smiled at him once more.

"I thought you had gone back for some bunny tail"

She said to him as she let the smile slip from her lips and turned towards the doors that would take them back out into the street, her arm came back once again and this time he made the most of the opportunity and took her hand in his and they moved out into the night.

The streets outside were still very much full of life as the Halloween revellers stumbled about in their various costumes and outfits. the night seemed so alive to him and it just seemed so right.

Walking down the set of steps at the front of the club they were now both on the street and he stopped to see which way she needed to lead him next, overhead the clouds seemed to be forming into a darker more ominous shape.

In the distance, the night sky was suddenly awakened by the sound of thunder and the clouds above now seemed to be the warning of a coming storm that would wash down over them given the chance.

She looked up at the clouds as she heard the thunderclap in the distance and seemed lost in them for a few seconds before she turned to look at him, without thinking he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Looks like it is going to be some downpour"

She said and laughed a soft laugh at the thought of it

"We could grab a cab"

he offered as he looked around to see if there was a taxi rank or one of those illegal cabs sitting around waiting to pick up passengers, not always the best thing to use, but he felt it might have to be the way to go.

"So, are you going to loan me your jacket or place it over a puddle on the ground if we come across any?"

She asked with a playful but mocking tone, the tone of it and the look on her face told him that the taxi was probably not going to be the option she wanted to take he thought to himself and ceased his search for one.

Before he could speak she slipped her arm inside of his and stood on one side of him, his body next to the road as it should have been, her head turned to look at him and she twitched her nose slightly.

"I think we should be ok? after all, were not Gremlins"

She laughed at her comment before taking another look up at the gathering clouds, in the distance another crack of thunder could be heard for an instant before it was gone again.

"Got to love Miami, huh?"

He turned his head slightly to look towards her and she took the first step to start this journey together.

"Oh, yeah, old people and seasonal weather, .nowhere else to be"

He said as he felt the first drops of rain begin to drop down from the skies above and fall over both of them, just a light touch for now, but he suspected that it would get worse before it had played out.

"There goes your makeup"

She said with that grin of hers again, he watched as she reached up to run a single finger down his left cheek and the paint started to come away with it as the rain fell softly over it as they reached a corner and she gestured for them to turn the corner and past a small convenience store.

"So, Military, I take it"

She said with a laugh as she ran her other hand over the shoulder of his uniform and felt the material it was made from.

"I thought you wanted me to be a stripper?"

He said in response and laughed at her comment and this made her smile in response as they turned the corner.
"Well, it was that or you left the rest of the Village people at home, but tell me, which one were you? Y, M, C or A?"

He opened his eyes in mock shock at this and then laughed even as he shot her a stern look.

"Oh, you are quite the feisty one"

And she too gave her feigned look of shock in response.

"What? Me? I am as innocent as..."

She paused to think for a moment before she spoke again

"Well, as innocent as any President in the last hundred years or so give or take"

He pondered her point for a moment as they stopped at a crossing point and his attention was suddenly drawn from her as he whipped his head around in the direction he heard the noise come from.

"Spare a dollar, please"

The words came from an old man dressed in dirty dishevelled looking clothes, his face weather from perhaps age or too much time spent in the sun and his skin almost as grim covered as the clothes he wore

A spark of recognition seemed to form in the older man's eyes as he looked and he brought his hand up in the form of a salute, this not just some effort to draw a favourable response from the man in uniform but a genuine salute.

He returned the salute as he reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled his wallet from it with a simple action.

"I got this soldier"

The words came from her and she stepped closer and began fishing a handful of bills from her purse and then separating four or five of them before offering them to the older man with no hesitation.

"Bless you, Miss, bless you, you two are a lovely couple"

He said gratefully as he took the money from her hand and then scurried away and from sight to spend his newly acquired windfall.

"That was nice of you"

He said as he stepped closer to her again his voice full of genuine sincerity as he spared a thought for the older man and wondered about what his story might have been as they began to walk down the street again.

Another rumble filled the sky and the heavens decided this was the perfect time for the drizzle of a downpour to become much more and the rains began to fall with a new intensity.

"Well what else was I going to do with all those dollar bills, soldier boy"

She offered with another laugh and he began to pull his jacket off and eased it around her shoulders to try and protect her from the downpour as the heavens now royally opened up and let loose.

She took the jacket which swamped her body and eased it up over her body and tried to protect her head from the elements.

"Thank you, but you are not getting me a court martial when you get a cold"

She offered in another playful response and they moved now with greater urgency as he easily kept pace with her and followed he could feel his dress shirt begin to stick to his body and could not help but understand why chivalry had died out and he smiled at the weirdness of the thought.

A few minutes later, she pointed up at an apartment building just up ahead of them, the building shrouded in near darkness with only a few lights on in what must have been apartment windows.

The sight of this was like a beacon calling to them both and they began to quicken their collective pace as the building loomed closer and he could see that sanctuary at least for her was close.

Ahead of them, he could see the movement of what looked like three individuals emerging from what must have been some sort of alleyway, the light from the street light not quite bright enough for him to make them out clearly as the middle member of the group took a step towards where they were.
