Moonlight Vigil

Moonlight Vigil

His heart felt heavy as he looked up at the sky, the sun still burned bright overhead but he knew that something was coming, something that he would need to stand against or the world would suffer for it.

He never chose this and he did not want this, but if we were allowed to choose our destiny then would anything ever get done? he had pondered that question many times leading to this point.

Now he stood in the doorway to his family tomb and cold only savour how the sun felt on his face and wondered that after tonight, would he ever feel it on his face again?

Slowly he turned from the door and placed his back to the sun, perhaps it was some sort of symbolic gesture, a goodbye perhaps, .but now he could see the interior of the ancient tomb, so many generations of his family buried here and left to lay in state.

So much history had gone and now just a flicker of memory or words on a crypt door, but no, their time had come and gone and now, well he had to make sure that he did not join their number and at the same time.

The thought was dismissed as quickly as he turned to see the stone casket that dominated the centre of the structure and had housed the head of his family for as long as memory could recall.

The top of it was now sealed and on top of the stone casket lay the body of his beloved, her body covered from neck to ankles in a white dress that could have easily been a burial shroud.

Her skin was an ashen colour, like someone who had not seen enough sun or lived sheltered from the outside world, a casual observer might have even seen that life had left that beautiful woman, but he could see the slow rise and fall of her chest as she lay in this death-like trance.

She was carefully balanced between this world and the next, but no paradise awaited her, he knew that and he would fight with his heart and soul to protect her from that fate.

The touch of the sun now quickly became a memory as he walked to stand next to her, his hand touching her cheek and brushing it gently, the urge to gently kiss her now swelling up inside of him.

His eyes were drawn to the two pinpoint bite marks on her neck, the connection that now held her in this place, he knew that that bastard would return tonight to try and finish the job, to carry her from the land of the living into his cursed world of the undead.

He would hold his ground and stand before the evil that wanted to take her from him he would be here long after the sun had set and maintain his Moonlight Vigil until the evil came

Then true love would either prevail or he would die trying.
