August 7: Eternal Echos
“Shhh…” she said quietly, “He’ll hear you.”
“What if I want him to hear?” he replied with the confidence of one who’d never been there before.
She shook her head, tired of his bravado in the face of a danger he knew nothing about.
“Fine. Wade out into the water. Close your eyes. Slow your breathing. And listen,” she dared him.
With a cocky smile he took her up on the dare. With arms wide open he walked out into the light. He felt the water swirl around him. He felt the sun warm his face and upper body. He smiled and turned to her. The light was at his back, and he looked radiant to her. Glorious.
Until the one she feared appeared.
The one pierced her friend with his arrow. Struck him straight through the heart, and her friend fell. Hard.
She knew it would happen, and she hid herself from the one. Cupid they called him. She wasn’t ready to face him again.
His last visit created eternal echos in her mind, echos of the love she desired with all of her heart, the heart he had pierced. The love she’d felt down to her bones left its scars.
“Never again,” she thought as she retreated back into the darkness.
