She slowly backed up, away from the sofa, and looked all around her. But nothing else seemed out of place.
RING!!! Her cell phone rang, startling her. She quickly went to answer it. It was the Johnsons just checking in. Claire was relieved.
She told them that everything was fine and the children were safe.
She told Mr. Johnson, "I hope you don't mind, but that life-sized clown statue by the pinball machine was a little too creepy for me, so I covered it with a blanket..."
There was dead silence from Mr. Johnson's side of the call. "Listen to me very carefully. Don't speak. Just go upstairs right now and get the children out of the house!"
"We don't have a clown statue in our house. Run to the neighbors directly across the street. We're on our way and calling the police now!" Mrs. Johnson replies.
Claire ran like lightning, up the stairs and raced to the children. You didn't have to tell her twice.
She and the children made it outside just as the police arrived. They were safe from harm's way.
The police told the Johnsons what a brave and good person Claire was. The Johnsons were so grateful to Claire but most importantly, everyone was ok.
