I’m an ex-con

It’s crazy how some CO’s switch up on you when it’s time for you to go home.

When you barely get there and while you’re locked up there, the CO’s are complete douchebags.

Personally I never disrespected any of them even if they were being douchebags because I know they go through a lot of BS on an average day dealing with grown crybabies and savages.

I’m just saying it was kinda cool how the very same CO that was acting like an A-hole during my stay there changed his tune from the moment he said: “(last name) 107 ROLL UP YOUR MAT, YOU’RE GOING HOME!”

The guy was pretty cool while we were making our way towards the exit. He said: “Go out there and do something positive with your life. This doesn’t have to define you. Don’t come back!”

As he was saying all of this, I was actually among 3 other inmates who were also getting released that day. It was like that scene from Prison Break where everyone was excited for freedom, except we weren’t breaking out, we were gonna be free citizens again and it felt amazing.

Whenever I think I have it bad these days, or whenever I’m feeling sorry for myself, it helps to remember where I started and how far I’ve come.

I can look up at the sky again, I can go outside for a walk when i please, I got my privacy back, I can eat decent meals out here, Etc.

All the things I once took for granted, are now things I highly value now.

On my first day out I literally went outside and touched some grass. Something seemingly simple like sleeping in my own bedroom without hearing all the ruckus one typically hears at night in jail returned to a soothing silence. That first steak 🥩 tasted amazing! It tasted like freedom.

I no longer take my freedom for granted. I got a full time job with lots of overtime. I even volunteer at a local ranch that runs an equine therapy program for people who have disabilities.

Jail wasn’t a fun place and I’m glad it wasn’t.
