The Basement Diaries 46

Somewhere in Ukraine - 21 February 2023 late

And now, Putin has had his say. All the world's against us. But it doesn't matter, because all the world together cannot defeat holy Russia. The evil west has imposed all these unjustifiable sanctions on us, which are the cause of all our sufferings and having no impact at all.

It is the sacred patriotic duty of the oligarchs to repatriate their wealth, their children and themselves, to support Russia's great crusade against western decadence.

Russian children must not be exposed to the realities of life outside Russia. The cruelty of gay. The cruelty of gay and lesbian relationships. The immorality of the transgender lobby. The absurdity of freedom of choice or speech, of equal treatment under the law.

The failure of democracy.

Surely it is better that Russian youth be protected from all this liberal nonsense. Surely it is better that they live in respect of their elders and of the motherland.

Surely it is better that they die to protect holy mother Russia, than live to change it!

Or words to that effect...

Does it matter what Putin says? He lies, we know he lies. He knows we know, and knows we know he knows we know. So who cares? He doesn't. There is no reason why we should.

Back in base camp. This seems civilised, compared with our last few days. Hot food and coffee. Showers. Dry underwear. How little it takes to make us comfortable.

An uneventful journey back. Debriefed formally. Then presented lessons learned to the rest of the group. Another team will go out next week.

The rest of this week is more war games. Armoured Brigade, tactical level assault against prepared positions, including river crossing. Oh, and running up and down hills.

I will say this for Putin. He makes a good enemy, since he's so easy to despise.
