I'm guessing it's the law firm that's paying for it, hoping to recoup their expenses by winning a huge settlement.

@cherokeepatti I have no idea what the fraction is. I sued someone once, and I was actually very impressed with the law firm I went through. They kept 1/3 plus expenses (which were far less than $100, mainly for duplicating and postage) and I kept the rest. I did not have to pay any "lawyer's fee".
Of course, "expenses" run a lot higher if you are taking out TV ads. And the amount awarded has to be split among all the plaintiffs.
