Being a professional artist. I detested all the self promotion and marketing.. the networking and the art show hassle, dealing with people who want free/almost free art from you. Dealing with commission bids and customers who can’t describe what they want, except that what you made isn’t it and they’re not paying until you get it right.. Dealing with the pretentious, shady, egotistical artists.. The drug scene overlap.. All exhausting, plus the financial struggles. Love art, but none of that.
@WhateverWorks I know what you mean. I went to college for illustration because I always drew as a kid and I was extremely good at it so it seemed like the logical choice, but something felt so wrong about drawing when I wasn't in the mood to draw, I couldn't even imagine doing it as a full time job and having to sell it and draw things I didn't necessarily want to draw. I got into graphic design & computer art because I enjoyed the faster results and became extremely good at that too and even now it's such a struggle to use my talent for work and constantly do what other people want me to do because it's always boring compared to the art that I like to do for fun. But I'm also not sure I'd want to do what I like to do for fun for somebody else who wants to pay me to do it because I like having a personal exclusive relationship with my art and only want to do it when I want and how I want.
@scorpiolovedeep There's a polite way to tell someone the truth and a rude way to tell someone the truth. The reason you got burnt probably wasn't because you were honest but because you were insensitive.
@scorpiolovedeep Oh I see what you mean, you were being too vulnerable in the hands of somebody else.. yeah that happens, it's tricky on deciding who to really open up to
Being a poker player.. I wanted to start learning poker strategies but then realized that I ain’t getting rich off that lol. Wasted around $75 on poker books and a poker set. Finished a book, and memorized some poker maths. I mean, it was fun learning and playing with fake money, but I wasn’t gonna get anything out of it. I felt dumb for trying to learn how to gamble.
Quite a few things. Long distance driving alone, socializing for the sake of it, at events I don’t care for, romantic relationships because the kind I always wanted doesn’t exist (only took 60-years to realize this). There are others, but that’s enough for now.
Sewing. I thought it would be fun, but I can’t understand the patterns. I made curtains, some Halloween costumes for the girls that could pass muster in the dark, and just use the machine for repairs now. No triumph was worth slogging through all the frustration. lol
@mindstruggle it's not that....it's when we realize as we get older and there's responsibilities and doing other things to enjoy working on. I use to enjoy Video games but lost interest in it.
