How do I respond when someone vents?

I do not know how to respond when someone vents. It’s not like it happens often, but when it does, idk what to say. I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing and make them even more upset. Same thing with when someone’s crying to me , idk what to say but I’m afraid that whatever I do, it’ll make it worse. So help pls

@Queendragonfly so simple right? Just being there is so important. I think a lot of people remember those hard times and who was there for them. Goodness knows I still do.
