Rebuilding your life

Ever feel like you’re rebuilding a life that you never wanted to have to rebuild in the first place?

Sometimes I look at my life and wonder how I ended up here. Relationships lost, family estranged, years gone by, and the feeling that everyone else has moved forward while I’m still trying to find my place in this world.

I’ve had to learn how to survive without the people I thought would always be there. I’ve had to fight battles inside my own head that nobody else can see. And I’ve had to figure out who I am without the distractions I once used to escape reality.

The hardest part isn’t always surviving the past. Sometimes it’s trying to believe that there’s something better waiting for you in the future.

At some point, you have to stop asking why your life turned out the way it did and start asking what you’re going to do with the life you have left.

I’m curious how many other people are quietly rebuilding themselves while the rest of the world assumes they’re doing just fine.

Have you ever felt like you were starting over in life while everyone else was already where they wanted to be?

My life is not even close to how I had planned it to be. I spent too many years trying to create the life that I had envisioned for myself. That was causing me such unhappiness. My life now is more guided by a quote from Joseph Campbell, "We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us". My life now, is far from perfect, but I'm happier now than I was before.

Something of sudden realization that I stumbled upon at a very young, pre-adolescent age, was what turned out to be the very clear fact that none of us actually plan our lives, nor do we plan our day to day activities.

We think we do, but thinking that we plan our life is akin to sitting on your Dad's lap behind the steering wheel of his car, thinking that you are actually steering his car down the road when you ask him if you can drive the car.

We all know now that Dad was really doing all the steering. What we never figured out was, that it still wasn't US driving our day-to-day lives down the road, even when we became adults.

Who then, is driving our life for us while we pretend to be the one behind the wheel steering our life down the road?
