Flying the nest

How old were you when you first left home

I was seventeen

I wanted my independence and freedom from a toxic environment way too much.

I saved up some pennies from working in a cafe then one day I packed my bags and left

Fearless ~ determined

I had a plan and it was tough but eventually everything started falling into place

My little apartment had a kitchen , a shower no bathtub a living room and a bedroom… to me it was perfect

I started discovering myself more , something I was unable to do before… I felt as free as a bird… ahhh how cool those times were

Later on I had to work two jobs to keep my little place , ha! I remember using the laundrette on my only day off

That’s all a distant memory now

I got a job before completing my Engineering degree, never looked back.

However I did return briefly for 1 yr as I changed careers. It didnt click and I went away back to my Engineering career.

Seventeen is so young but it sounds like if was the right decision for you and I’m glad it worked out

I moved out when I got married at age 27

I was 18. I moved in with an older woman. She was older by two months. 🤣
Took college courses and worked but managed to graduate in 4 years.
I left home at 19, I moved in with a friend. I never really had to live alone. A couple years later I was married.

I was 22 a little older. My homelife was good, but I just felt compelled to get my own place.

Returned home after graduation at 20.
Went to work, left home, moved into commune for 6 mos, then got my own apartment, eventually got married, lived with him for several years, was widowed

But I left my parents’ home 44 years ago.

I was 18 when I left the farm, then immediately started university on a high school gymnastics scholarship and moved into a 4 bedroom rented house on the edge of campus with 3 other girls my age who had rich parents. A year into my business degree, I was invited to represent my university in gymnastics just as I was starting my own small business at a local marina. But I hung in there at university until the very end and enjoyed the social life that got invited through the revolving front door of our rented house on the edge of campus and if I did anything good for the benefit of mankind while I was a student, I can say that I taught my 3 house-mates the art of asking a guy out on a date if nothing else, because none of them had ever dated a guy when we all first met!

I was 29. I was self employed and rarely ever home. My parents had a huge house. I had the entire downstairs. Mom did the laundry and cleaning. My wife and I got together and we bought a house. We moved in a few days before my birthday.
