2022 California Proposition 1 ( Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom)

Proposition 1, titled Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom and initially known as Senate Constitutional Amendment 10 (SCA 10), is a California ballot proposition and state constitutional amendment that will be voted upon in the general election on November 8, 2022. If passed, the proposition will amend the Constitution of California to explicitly grant the right to an abortion and contraceptives. The decision to codify abortion rights in the state constitution was precipitated by Politico's publishing of a leaked draft opinion showing the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, reversing judicial precedent that previously held that the US constitution protected the right to an abortion.

As a joint effort by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro tempore Toni Atkins, and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, the constitutional amendment passed in the California State Senate in a 29–8 vote on June 20, 2022, and 58–17 in the California State Assembly on June 27, ahead of a June 30 deadline to have the amendment voted upon in November 2022. On July 1, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber formally designated the amendment as Proposition 1, making the proposed constitutional amendment the first abortion-related ballot measure in California since Proposition 4 in 2008, a rejected initiative that would have imposed a waiting period on abortions and parental notification in the case of minors.

Polling on Proposition 1 consistently shows the ballot measure passing by a wide margin, ranging from two-thirds to three-quarters of California voters supporting the proposition. The ballot measure derives most of its support from the California Democratic Party, feminists, medical professional organizations, labor, and newspaper editorial boards saying that the amendment would codify existing law and protect Californians from restrictive abortion policies. The opposition to Proposition 1 comes from the California Republican Party, Christian organizations, and anti-abortion groups arguing that the ballot measure would legalize late-term abortion.

Does this make it ok ? A wrong does not become right Just because it is accepted by the majority

@missyann maybe you should move to Hungary, we don't want fascist, minoritarian rule in the US

@SW-User Maybe you should move somewhere where abortions are forced. Somewhere where no one has the right to fight for what they feel is injustice. Somewhere where no one is allowed to have an opinion because the Government rules. I know North Korea.

We want women to have every right except the right to end the development of a life in the stage between conception and birth. If we allow women to this right then we MUST make it a Constitutional right for any man (equal rights )or woman to stop the development of a life at any stage they want. I should be allowed to kill a 3 yr old because he's not 4 or a 20 yr old because I want them to be 21. The stage of human life will be older tomorrow then they are today

@SW-User The question isn't wether a woman should have the right to have an abortion. The question is, is it a life between conception and birth? The moment of fertilization the DNA is established. Its gender, eye color, hair color, what it's height will be. Completely different from it's mother and father. Characteristics that have never been or ever will be again. That means a distinct human being to me

I have 3 friends who have had abortions. 2 before I knew them and 1 that I wasn't successful trying to help. I loved them all before I knew and I love them still. I know 1 ( not a friend )who has had 7 who said to me that it is easier to have an abortion than for her to remember to take a pill everyday and too much trouble to remember to make sure a guy has a condom and an IUD ( which I don't believe in ) caused cramping. I think her actions are EVIL, but I never have nor will I ever tell someone that they are going to hell..

I think that women and men have the responsibility to ensure that they use birth control but it. Is ultimately a womans responsibility to say NO if they don't have protection.. Isn't this much easier solution?
SW-User
@missyann birth control other than going in and cutting tubes (in him or her) fails literally all the time

And good luck saying no because you don't have protection when you get raped (by a stranger or your dad or when you're 10 years old), and good luck when the spawn will kill the HOST in the process of being born

The body of the woman living next door to you is none of your business
@missyann
Maybe you should move somewhere where abortions are forced.

It’s about choice, so that makes no sense. Unless women and girls are going to be classified as second-class citizens and solely human incubators, they should be the ones to decide when and if they reproduce.

As long as it is possible for pregnancy to result from rape and forced incest, prohibiting abortion is saying that the lives of women and girls mean less than anyone else’s, including potential fetuses they may carry.

@SW-User If I agree abortion should be absolutely without question legal for rape and incest victims would you agree that all other abortions should be illegal ??
@missyann All abortions should be strictly an issue between a woman or girl and her doctor. Anything else proposes the classification of women and girls in this country as second class citizens and human incubator status.

@bijouxbroussard Just what I expected you to say. Anytime someone brings up cases of rape and I ask this, no one ever says yes, with the exception of rape.all other should be illegal
Why even bring rape into the equation ? Rape is not a factor in this conversation since you believe that all abortions should be legal.
@missyann It’s a factor in the lives in many girls and women, like it or not. And several of the states that ban abortions now are making no exceptions, some not even to save the woman’s life, because some politicians think they know better than doctors . So it has to be part of the conversation, because it’s already become an issue.
Btw, all abortions haven’t been legal since 2003 when so-called “late term" were banned. The only time that happens is when the fetus is already not viable and the woman’s life is in danger. Now there have been cases where women have been obliged to carry deceased fetuses in their wombs until toxic because of some total stranger’s belief that it’s somehow preserving "life", who might go after the doctor extracting the corpse. 😞

@bijouxbroussard I realize that rape is an issue right now. Are you saying that you only support abortion in cases of rape or for all abortion ?

Dr. William Hern Boulder CO does no excuse late term abortions. The majority of these are not to save the mothers life. Abortion or ( heart stop beating ) death should not be an issue in any city or state. Always abortion. Politicians don't know better than Drs, they just know that Drs can use any excuse and call it life saving and have. That is why rights are being taken away from Drs being able to use any diagnosis they want. Media makes it sound like every Dr in america is afraid of losing their license. The only ones are those who used diagnosis and weren't actually life saving.

I truly don't understand the concept or reason behind forcing a woman to carry a fetus that died. This does seem cruel. I don't understand it well enough to comment
@missyann That sounds like an issue about one doctor. But as I’ve said, right-wing politicians (mostly men, who have never been, and will never be pregnant) are making laws that will be imposed in all situations, over the objections of patient and doctor.
I’m saying that it needs to be the woman’s choice. Between herself and the doctor she trusts. People and politicians she doesn’t even know shouldn’t even be involved.

I’m old enough to remember how things were before Roe v. Wade, and women certainly sought abortions. Girls with families who could afford it, sent them elsewhere or had private physicians "take care of things". Everyone else had a friend who “knew somebody"; someone who’d dropped out of medical school, for example. Girls and women died, or their lives were ruined.
I had a close family member who committed suicide because she didn’t want to have a baby at age 12.

I hate the idea of going back to those days, but in some states we will. And states like Texas want to overreach and dictate what their women can do in states where the right to choose is still legal. It’s outrageous.
missyann · 56-60
@bijouxbroussard First of I am sorry about your cousin. That must have been horrible. A 12 year old who was pregnant that felt that suicide was the only solution. I have never had anyone close to me have to go through a pregnancy that young or a suicide. If I had, I might have a different stance on abortion. I have worked with a 13 yr old but the stigma today isn't what it was 50 or 60 yrs ago.

I named this Dr Hern because he is the loudest with his pride of performing no excuse late term abortions. There are more that I can name if you want me too. Doctor have done this to themselves by abusing the life saving excuses. Both democrats and republicans abuse rights. Everyone keeps pushing the line further and further. The more that is given, the more we all think we're entitled too. There is no meeting in the middle. Its ALL or its war

What situations can politicians make decision ? We elect them to make.laws for us. You may not vote for or like every politicians or their convictions but there can't be 2 different set of laws for people in 1 country or for different genders, races ,sexual orientation and religions. This is the only thing that women don't want a mans opinion on. Why was it ok in 1973 when 7 mens opinion and ruling was in favor of abortions ? Not all women were in favor of that. It can be said " What right does a man have to say that abortion SHOULD be a right.? They don't have a womans body. They're not the ones missing out on the joy of giving birth " The " man " excuse works both ways

If we can actually watch a life in the stages of development from conception to birth develop on an ultrasound. This means life to me
@missyann In the last polls 65% of people in the U.S. supported choice. At minimum, a majority support access to abortion in cases of rape and forced incest. The family member I mentioned was the victim of assault by a 45 year old "family friend". The law then, like the new laws in some states now, didn’t allow for abortion even in that situation.

The excuse of "states rights" has been largely a joke, historically, from the fugitive slave acts that allowed owners to send agents into non-slave states to snatch people, to laws in states like Texas, which try to punish women for going to states where abortion is still legal to exercise their reproductive rights.
