Kansas votes to keep abortion legal

The final result was a landslide - 59% in favor of keeping the state's constitutional protection of abortion rights, and only 41% voting to remove them. This wasn't in a liberal state, either - Kansas is a conservative state that Donald Trump also won by a 20 point landslide. 80% of Kansans identify as Christians. And based on the votes for governor, half of the votes to preserve abortion rights came from Republicans.

The conventional wisdom, that the Dobbs decision will demoralize pro-choice voters, that abortion isn't an important enough issue to motivate apathetic voters to come out for a midterm primary, that people are more concerned about high gas prices - all of this turned out to be wrong. Democrats need to make the midterms about abortion and nothing but abortion. It would be ironic if Samuel Alito is the reason Democrats hold onto the House and gain seats in the Senate.

For 50 years, anti-abortion forces let the nutjobs among them set the agenda, because with Roe in place, it didn't matter. Now the nutjobs are in charge of the pro-life movement and reasonable people are sickened by what they're seeing. This is just the beginning.

I’m in favour of the 59% that voted to keep abortions legal.
The “nut jobs” and anti abortion fans are usually on the right wing conservative side of the fence.

It should be remembered that not every women who is given the option to have an abortion will pick that option. It’s a fucking hard horribly choice to have to make. But to take that choice away is wrong so I’m glad that women in Kansas can still have the freedom to decide for themselves.

Win for women’s rights! I really hope this is the beginning.
Much like with the 2020 election, the Republicans cheated and still lost.

@MarmeeMarch I know, right? They're so good at cheating that there's literally no evidence.

That’s a victory right there for women’s rights.

Just for context...
KS doesn't allow abortion after 20 weeks, except in case of mother's health.
And the law continues to keep out govt funding of abortions.

@LeopoldBloom Nope. That's not true for all states. The huge change here, and one that too many miss, is that it was pushed back to the states to decide how to handle. It is NOT a federal declaration. KS has abortion regulated in its constitution. Other states have zero restrictions...or some completely outlaw it. It is up to the states. Roe incorrectly declared that it was a right to seek/have abortions. That was not true.

It might be legal in some places, but was never a "right."
@easterniowegin So you would be opposed to a federal ban?
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
@LeopoldBloom there is too much federal govt, but every society has rules against killing innocent people. The problem is that so many selfish/immature people have dehumanized the unborn as a way of making their killing more palatable. It's really too bad that tearing a fetus, limb from limb from it's mother is acceptable for so many.
My hub is a republican and he says he feels neutral about it.

@Spoiledbrat birth control is also in their sights
Wven though I personally would never have an abortion I can see why one might. That is why I'm pro choice. @justanothername

@Spoiledbrat The pill argument is only part of it.
No matter how a woman got pregnant, she should always have a choice as to whether she has an abortion or not if that becomes the only option.
Good for Kansas !

That was the SCOTUS deal, for better or worse
As it should be. SCOTUS should have left this up to the vote of independent states in the first place. @Dino11
@stratosranger So you’re against a nationwide ban?
