Are we doomed to fail because we have an inherent flaw?

It was a line in conversation in the remake of 'The Day the Earth stood still' which the character played by Keanu Reeves said, which really made this remake stand out for me. It was a very spiritually charged movie that provoked a lot of social comment when we saw it, long after its debut year, at university.

I had issues with the remake.

Specifically, when Gort has more emotional range and stage prescence than Klaatu.

@IzzyCastro: ...but Keanu played him so inhumanly, and emotionless, that the message of the story, "BE GOOD TO EACH OTHER" gets lost in the telling. In the original, you got the feeling that Klaatu wanted us to be kind and loving and hugs-for-everyone... and to take it to heart, because if we set foot offworld and still haven't figured this one out, our aggressive species would be destroyed. In the remake, the feeling you get was-- we must be destroyed because although we have a grasp on our intellect and ingenuity, we lack any control emotionally, making us a highly volatile threat to other lives outside of us. That the solution is to be an emotionless drone, like Klaatu. Very different message.

@GwydionFrost: you're talking about different eras, the former version made in the Fifties with a sense of impending nuclear destruction, the latter post cold war, in the age of ecological doom.

@IzzyCastro: And both considered inevitable during each era, respectively. We're supposed to be good, caring, loving humans was the message against the Communists. I'm confused why polluted water's solution would be Adderall.

What is success to a dead person? Why the fuss

The only way we are doomed is if we allow our flaws to prevent us from doing well, learning, and advancing ourselves.

Doesn't failure expose the flaw? We'll never know if we don't try.
lightningblue · 26-30, M
failing isnt bad if we learn from it

It wasn't a patch on the original... lol
