A child never forgets…
When I was 5 or 6, my parents took us for toy shopping on Eid (our version of Christmas). We used to look forward to that day with so much excitement.
My eyes fell on the most beautiful doll I had ever seen. She had the silkiest shiniest hair, which meant the world to me at that age. I urged my dad to buy her for me. He asked the shopkeeper about the price, but it was too high for a doll. Dad tried to bargain but the guy didn’t budge so he walked away, not realizing he was leaving my dream behind. I was crying in silence. He was busy with my siblings too so it was unintentional.
Noticing my quiet heartbreak, Mom held my hand and took me back to the shop, and despite everything, she bought that doll for me with her own money. My happiness was bigger than the whole sky.
She said she couldn’t bear to see sadness in my eyes.
I dunno why 30 years later, that moment still touches me so deeply.
