But I remember distinctly this time I walked into my mums room and she was watching tv. There was a girl singing on the TV who was about my ago (maybe 12).

I said, "wow, she is so much better than me."

My mum said, "of course she is."

I sang in secret from then on and to this day ahah

I can relate. I used to like to dance and one day, my mom made a comment along the lines of, "You wouldn't actually dance like that in front of people, you know?"
